Mandelz Consulting

Intelligent logistics. Intelligent data.

How smart construction site logistics is shaping Switzerland's most modern data centers

On behalf of a leading electrical and general contractor, Mandelz Consulting was commissioned to develop the logistics concept for the construction of one of the most sustainable and innovative data centers in Switzerland, provide operational support, and continuously optimize the process. The goal: a top-level data center, efficient supply chains, and robust and dynamic construction site logistics.

The location is in Lupfig/Zurich West – the existing DC hub already functions as a relevant data location with high significance in the international data center network.

Our approach: from concept to implementation – with depth

Analysis & target concept

First, we worked with the client and the general electrical contractor to conduct a logistical analysis of the current situation: material flows, site constraints, available resources (stacking equipment, transport routes, storage areas), and interfaces with the electrical trade. From this, we derived a target logistics concept with optimized processes, storage logic, and buffer zones.

Innovations & tools

In addition to classic processes, we specifically integrated innovations to increase transparency and agility:

  • The Project Card: a compact card in credit card format (CC size) that contains all relevant project information (safety instructions, contacts, installation instructions, RAMS, idea box). This is always carried on person and ensures that all those involved on site have the relevant information at their fingertips at all times.

  • Shop floor boards and structures: color systems for lots A, B, C, and D; whiteboard to make processes visible; checklists with safety and order criteria; concepts and instructions to make day-to-day business visible and controllable.

  • Ongoing feedback loops: From the field to planning and back, to enable agile adjustments. Clearly structured material and waste separation, as well as a return policy.

  • 3D warehouse logistics: The creation of three storage zones: 1. Directly in the building; 2. In front of the building (transshipment point): 3. In the building next to the building (strategic; tools; equipment). Direct connection of the three zones, with specific instructions from suppliers

Operational introduction & monitoring

We accompanied the operational introduction, conducted workshops, provided support in setting up routines (e.g., daily checkpoints, whiteboard review meetings), and installed reporting and logistics order mechanisms.

At the same time, the logistics concept was continuously monitored: deviations from targets, bottlenecks, and potential for improvement were discussed weekly and incorporated iteratively.

Why Mandelz Consulting makes the difference in such projects

We don’t just understand logistics – we understand electrical and construction processes as an interface between technology, people, and the reality of the construction site. This means that when we talk about cable pulling and installation procedures, material buffers, or space requirements in shafts, we understand the implications for electrical planning and construction logistics. This results in a solution competence that is not merely theoretical – but effective where it matters: on the construction site.

Our approach: structure + agility + people orientation. Not a static concept, but a living system that adapts – with clear responsibilities, monitoring, and solidarity within the team.

Looking ahead

In the coming months, we will continue to refine the logistics concept:

  • Improve interfaces with subcontractors in real time
  • Increase the use of digitalization and visualize material stocks
  • Involve all stakeholders more closely in expectation management
  • Expand feedback processes and escalation chains
  • Create solid back-up structures to avoid emergencies
  • Subject the entire logistics structures to winter hardiness testing

We are very pleased to be working with the customer to realize a data center construction project that sets new standards in Switzerland.

"Logistics in data center construction is more than just transportation of material - it sets the pace for the project. With a combination of structure, agility, and humanity, Mandelz Consulting creates sustainable systems that grow and adapt."
